Joe Verzal, a carpenter-turned-underwater-explorer, embarked on a fascinating journey a year ago when he received an underwater drone as a gift. Little did he know, this hobby would lead him to uncover a wealth of historical artifacts and local mysteries.
"Every one of them has a story," Verzal says, emphasizing the personal connection he feels to these hidden treasures.
His findings, shared on social media, have not only captivated his friends but also a growing online community. With over 1,700 followers on his Facebook page, Divebots, Verzal's passion project has become a window into the past for many.
Uncovering Crystal Lake's Clear Waters
Crystal Lake's exceptionally clear waters, ranking among the healthiest in the nation, provide the perfect setting for Verzal's explorations. He has discovered that the 'sweet spot' for his drone is around 15 to 20 feet below the surface, where items are hidden in the sand yet still illuminated by sunlight.
"It's like a treasure hunt," Verzal explains, "You never know what you'll find, but the clarity of the water makes it an exciting challenge."
To explore deeper areas, Verzal borrows sonars, extending his reach and the potential for even more remarkable discoveries.
Historic Artifacts and Local Legends
Among Verzal's most prized discoveries are artifacts dating back to Crystal Lake's ice-harvesting era in the 19th century. This period, marked by the collection and shipment of ice before the invention of refrigeration, left its mark on the lake's bed.
Verzal has found wheels, gears, and even a snow horseshoe, offering a glimpse into this bygone industry. A large wheel he uncovered was donated to the Crystal Lake Historical Society, where it now serves as a fascinating exhibit.
"It's important to share these findings with the public," Verzal says. "Learning about our past helps us understand where we come from and appreciate the history of our community."
The historical society also holds a collection of spur line train tracks, uncovered in 2024, and has recently opened a permanent ice-harvesting exhibit at the Colonel Palmer House, featuring many of Verzal's findings.

Verzal's explorations have also sparked interest in urban legends and local myths. Many suggest he search for a train car believed to be at the bottom of the lake, a popular tale that Verzal is determined to either prove or debunk.
"I love the idea of exploring these legends," Verzal shares. "It's like a modern-day treasure map, and I'm excited to either confirm or put to rest these long-held beliefs."
Another myth, which Ann Viger, Vice President of the Crystal Lake Historical Society, is skeptical of, is the rumor of an underground tunnel connecting the lake to the Fox River.
"It's fascinating to consider the origins of these stories," Viger reflects. "Where do these legends come from, and what do they say about our collective imagination?"
Future Explorations and Community Engagement
Verzal's plans for the future are ambitious. He aims to survey the entire lake bed and create an interactive map, allowing locals and enthusiasts to explore the lake's history from the comfort of their homes.
"I want to bring the community along on this journey," Verzal explains. "By creating an interactive map, people can click on artifacts, watch the drone footage, and learn about our local history. It's a way to engage and educate in a fun, interactive way."
In the short term, Verzal hopes to host live viewing parties, where he'll project his drone's findings in real time, offering a unique, immersive experience.
